Overview & Responsibilities

 

Rackspace is looking for a Systems Engineer Manager to help round out our leadership group and guide our company and Rackers to success. We manage, maintain and architect the infrastructure for our global enterprise systems that supports are customers. We are responsible for Windows and Linux patching, packaging, anti-virus, monitoring and active directory services. We have a focus on changing the future of Rackspace and ensuring that our internal and external customers have reliable, always up infrastructure. We leverage System Center Operation Center (SCOM), Unified Infrastructure Management (UIM), Rackspace Monitoring, New Relic, Red Hat Satellite, Intensive Active Directory, Spacewalk, Ubuntu, debian and other technologies while leveraging automation solutions (eg. SALT, SCCM) and Development methodologies to achieve success. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: 

 

  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the overall day to day activities of high-level System Engineers and Software Developers focused on Enterprise Monitoring solutions.
  • Must be able to demonstrate technical problem-solving skills, strong leadership, and ability to motivate and lead your team through the good times and the bad.
  • Plan and track your business performance, and prioritize operational expense and licensing costs to ensure financial efficiency
  • Research and identify system areas that need to improve customer experience in a proactive manner; this includes immediate solutions, and long-term strategic paths, that can be deployed off-the-shelf or create new solutions via our Development Team.
  • Work closely with other groups throughout the company, including being a technical resource for internal groups and communicating frequently with engineering, support and development teams to help them improve the operational effectiveness of the systems you manage.

  • Focuses time on hiring, coaching, and developing a solid team in order to accomplish the above.
  • Analyze operational processes and escalation procedures to identify opportunities for service delivery improvements
  • Helps set development goals for your employees and provide regular feedback to them so that they always know where they stand in your organization.
  • Continuously finds ways to improve the business through better processes, products and people. Able to assist in planning the strategic vision of the organization for the next 5 years.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY:

  • Great leadership, engaging in dealing with customers, project management, positive attitude, versatile written and verbal skills. Attention to detail and the ability to master broad system interdependencies and effectively communicate how a change affects the system as a whole.
  • Understanding of common web technologies: http, ftp, ssh, as well as DNS and networking fundamentals. Skilled in leading projects, especially in deploying, migrating and maintaining live end-user systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with 3+ years of management experience leading technical professionals in related areas. At manager’s discretion, high school diploma, or equivalent required, with 3+ years of demonstrated leadership experience in technical environments.
  • Minimum of 2 years of project management, leading medium to large scale projects with varying complexities.
