Overview & Responsibilities

Primary Responsibility:

As an Information Developer at Rackspace, you collaborate with engineers, system architects, user-experience designers, and other writers to create documentation for Rackspace Private Cloud products and services. Based on source material gathered from whiteboard talks, brainstorming sessions, interviews with subject-matter experts and engineering notes, you create clear, accurate and effective documentation for developers and customers who consume Rackspace APIs and systems, as well as internal and external system administrators who use Rackspace products.

As a member of our team, you'll be valued for your technical and subject-matter expertise in the areas you document. You'll be expected to develop your own understanding of our products, our audience, our business objectives, and our standards, and then use that knowledge holistically to craft documentation that contributes to our support-readiness and customer experiences.

 

Job complexity:

• Researches, outlines, and writes documentation that is technically accurate and conforms to the company's writing style.

• Works on a variety of documentation projects that include API and service documentation, user manuals and training documents, standard operational procedures, and more.

• Personally test services and capabilities that you document, to ensure doc accuracy and completeness

• Participate actively in product and engineering planning discussions

• Contribute to continuous improvement of doc standards, tools, and processes

• Help with writing blogs, case studies, and other content as needed

 

Required Skills:

• Ability to write clean, concise text with minimal editorial support

• Experience writing programming guides and API reference information

• Experience using git and GitHub for source control

• Ability to read and write code in Python, Go, or other programming languages

• Comfort using bash/Unix/Linux command line tools

• Experience in using reStructuredText and Markdown

• Experience using code/documentation review tools, such as GitHub reviews, Gerrit or others

• Experience working on or integrating with Agile software development teams

• Ability to cope with changing requirements in a fast-moving environment

 

The ideal candidate will have:

• Background in several of the following areas: networking technology, Restful APIs, Cloud Computing, Unix/Linux or Windows Servers, databases, and automating system administration with scripts

• Experience writing modular information that can be used in more than one context

• Experience using project/issue tracking systems, preferably Jira

 

Supervision:

• This role will be expected to be able to independently execute against projects that integrate with cross-functional teams throughout our business.

 

Qualifications

Experience/Education:

• Typically requires one to two years of technical writing experience and four or more years of exposure to software engineering environments

• Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or other related technical discipline is desirable
