Overview & Responsibilities

Rackspace is seeking a Linux Systems Engineer to work on our multi-tenant email platform in our Blacksburg, VA office. We are responsible for sending, receiving and access to millions of mailboxes on Linux servers hosted in a multi-datacenter environment.



  • Automate regular tasks to streamline development, testing and deployment
  • Develop optimizations for system performance and future scalability
  • Diagnose and fix complex server and system wide issues
  • Collaborate with other engineers, testers and Software Developers to ensure smooth rollouts, continual operation and fanatical support of quality software


Job Requirements:

  • Professional experience in Linux system administration and configuration
  • Scripting language development experience (Bash, Python, Ruby, Perl, etc.)
  • Experience installing, configuring and securing RHEL, CentOS, or derivative
  • Experience building and packaging software for deployments using meta package managers (Yum, Apt-Get, etc.)


Nice to have:

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related, preferred.
  • RHCSA or RHCE Certifications preferred. 
  • Familiarity with Internet email protocols (POP, IMAP, SMTP) and email architecture
  • Experience installing and configuring IMAP/POP email servers (Dovecot, Courier, etc.)
  • Experience installing and configuring mail transport agents (Postfix, Sendmail, Momentum, etc.)
  • Experience using a configuration management system (Chef, Puppet, Ansible, etc.)
  • Experience working with a large-scale system (1000+ servers)
  • Experience with relational databases (preferably MySQL)
  • Experience with non-relational databases (preferably Redis, Cassandra and Solr)
  • Experience with message brokers (RabbitMQ, Kafka, etc.)
  • Experience with Linux logging services (Syslog-ng, Flume, etc.)
