    Overview & Responsibilities



    Architect, transform, design, upgrade, migrate, and deploy databases for Rackspace Professional Services customers.  Assist customers in deploying databases to the cloud, update on-prem customers' architectures to improve performance or support new loads. Update indices, optimize ETL, analyze performance and recommend infrastructure and database changes, recommend application access strategies. Consultatively discover requirements for RTO/RPO and build fault-tolerant solutions. Design and deploy DR environments. Configure database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security. Apply data modeling techniques to ensure development and implementation support efforts meet integration and performance expectations.  Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time, providing problem resolution end-to-end.  Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes.  Assist developers with complex query tuning and schema refinement.  Share domain and technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to other peers and team members. 


    PROFESSIONAL SERVICE'S MISSION STATEMENT: Provide the expertise needed to address the end to end customer journey by transforming, migrating and optimizing workloads in a multi-cloud world, fully leveraging Racker-delivered and/or Partner-Enabled Services.



    • 5+ years MS SQL Server Administration experience required
    • Experience upgrading from EOL MSSQL versions to latest and greatest running on different platforms.
    • Expert knowledge of SQL syntax, including Stored Procs and triggers.
    • Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools
    • Expert in troubleshooting resource contention issues related to CPU, memory, I/O, disk space etc.
    • Expert knowledge of performance tuning at the server and application levels.
    • Expert in using Query Store and SQL profile traces to troubleshoot perf issues.
    • Strong understanding of indexes, index management, integrity checks and statistics.
    • Experience in administering MSSQL Active-Active, Active-Passive Cluster, Peer to peer replication and transactional replication
    • Expert knowledge in HA and DR solutions including MS Clustering Services, Availability Groups, Database Mirroring, Log Shipping and SQL Replication.
    • Expert knowledge in Backup design and support.
    • Expert skill in SQL Server 2005, 2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2016, 2017.
    • Expert in building and improving ETL workflows using SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, DTS
    • Expert in PowerShell scripting.
    • Experience working with Windows server, including Active Directory
    • Excellent written and verbal communication

    • Ability to multi-task and context-switch effectively between different activities and teams
    • MCTS, MCITP, and/or MVP certifications a plus


    SUPERVISION:  Works with general supervision; works autonomously with general instruction on new projects or assignments.  Decisions impact the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of own team. May impact closely related teams through quality of output and service provided. Adopts and implements business and process improvements.


    EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:  High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree in technical field preferred.  7 - 9 years of relevant technical experience required, including a minimum of 4 years of engineering experience in migration, implementation, and production management.  Advanced knowledge and experience across multiple technologies in a single domain (Cloud, Security, DevOps, etc).  OS certification and Rackspace Cloud Savvy/Smart certification strongly preferred. At least one top tier technical certifications in a highly desired technology domain preferred.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  General office environment.  May require long periods sitting and viewing a computer monitor.  Moderate levels of stress may occur at times.  No special physical demands required.  Occasional domestic travel, up to 50%.
